What is OSCE?

OSCE stands for “Objective structured clinical examination”. This is part two of the Test of Competence. This is a practical exam taken after applicants arrive in the UK. In this part you'll be tested on your clinical and communication skills. This can only be taken in the UK & involves acting out scenarios which you are likely to encounter in your nursing job.You can sit your CBT or OSCE in any order, but you must successfully complete both parts to continue with your application for initial registration or readmission.

New structure

The new OSCE has 10 stations:

  1. Four stations will continue to be linked together around a scenario: the APIE (one station for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation)
  2. Four stations to test skills (two pairs of two skills)
  3. Two new stations to assess the candidate's values and behaviours and evidence-based practice.

Once you pass OSCE & pay for your registration, a NMC pin will be sent in the post.
