What is OET?

The Occupational English Test (also known as OET) is an international English language test for the healthcare sector. It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practise in an English-speaking environment. This was introduced by the NMC on 1st November 2017 as an alternative to the IELTS

If you have completed an OET examination you must provide a certificate that confirms:

  1. Grade B (350 or above) for reading, listening, and speaking and
  2. At least grade C+ (300 or above) for writing.
NMC accept the OET on Paper, OET on Computer, and the OET@Home.

Combining OET test scores

You can achieve the required mark across two OET test sittings if:

  1. You sit the tests within 12 months of each other
  2. You’re tested in all four sections at the same time
  3. You achieve at least grade B (350-440) for reading, listening and speaking, and at least grade C+ (300-340) for writing in at least one of the two test sittings and
  4. No scores in either of the two test sittings are below grade C+ (300-340) for listening, reading, and speaking, or below grade C (250-290) for writing

You cannot combine OET and IELTS test scores when combining tests
